Sensory Avoidance

Here is a selection of interventions covering Sensory Avoidance which is common in autistic children.

When people have a sensation avoiding pattern of sensory processing, they are bothered by sensory input more than others. Children who have sensation avoiding patterns are rule bound, ritual driven and uncooperative. When a person has sensation avoiding patterns, interventions are directed at making input less available, so that the person does not become overwhelmed and want to withdraw from participation in everyday life.

The importance of creating a comfortable and secure home through a positive relationship with the child cannot be overstated. Children who are more securely attached to their parents develop better emotional regulation skills. They tend to be more persistent and succeed more often when faced with difficult tasks. They are also more successful in developing peer relationships. Regular one-on-one time with their parents is an effective way of doing this.

Therapy with children with sensory processing disorders should occur in short "bursts" rather than over a prolonged period. Working for periods of approximately six weeks with an occupational therapist or other professional familiar and trained in this area is recommended.
Praise the child for all their accomplishments, especially for managing his sensory needs appropriately. Smith and Gouze (2004) suggest the ratio of praise to criticism or negative feedback should be 10:1.

By planning ahead and getting appropriate interventions for challenging behavior many difficult situations can be avoided. Most children who have difficulty with self-regulation benefit significantly from structure. Predictability in the daily routine can decrease conflicts within the family and at school and create a more peaceful environment.

Consider creating a set menu for the week which you can post in the kitchen and then discuss. This allows you to remain focused on the week ahead and helps the child predict the kind of sensory inputs they will be receiving over the next several days.
